THERE was pandemonium at the Okporo/Rumuodara axis of the East-West Road on Tuesday when a group of persons took to the streets in protest of the death of a member of a community task force for commercial tricycle riders.
The keke rider was reportedly attacked with a machete on Sunday evening by one of his colleagues over the sharing formula for the day’s job.
It was gathered that a heated argument had ensued between both task force members before one of them identified simply as Kelvin drew out a cutlass and attacked his colleague.
Our correspondent learnt that the victim identified as Clement was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, where he died on Tuesday following the injury he sustained during the attack.
Miffed by the development sympathisers and relatives of the deceased embarked on a protest.
Tension, however, increased when suspected hoodlums attempted to hijack the protest and unleash another round of mayhem before the police came to the rescue.
Speaking on the incident, the Rumuodara Youth President, Frank Weli, said, “We tried to quell the looming crisis and when we saw that it was getting out of hand, we had to call in the Okporo Divisional Police and with the help of the DPO, we were able to calm everything down. The young man that murdered the other person has been arrested and he is currently in police custody.”
When contacted, the State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr Nnamdi Omoni, confirmed the incident, adding that the prime suspect had been arrested.
Omoni also said that the matter had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation.
